What is a half life?
Time it takes for half of the radioactive isotope to change into a product
100
What is macroevolution
It is when scientists believe that an organisms can change into a completely different organism.
100
For Redi's experiment what organism did he use?
Flies
200
What is the most common isotope used to date living things?
Carbon 14
200
What is microevolution
When an organism morphs to a different type of the same organism
200
What was Redi trying to prove?
Living things can only come from other living things
300
What is relative dating
it is when fossils are dated relative to other fossils in similar layers of Earth
300
What is background extinction?
Normal ongoing extinction events usually not noticeable.
300
During Redi's time what was the belief called when people thought that life spontaneously developed?
Spontaneous generation
400
Explain how Carbon dating works
It works because Carbon 14 in the atmosphere has been constant therefore organisms inhale Carbon 14 at a constant rate till they die. After they die the Carbon 14 begins to decay then we can use the half-life of Carbon 14 to figure out the age.
400
What is mass extinction and what normally occurs after a mass extinction?
What is when many organisms die in a short time frame. After a mass extinction there is always an explosion of new species
400
Who disproved spontaneous generation finally?
Louis Pasteur
500
What is the half-life of Carbon-14
~5,700
