People thought the Union Army would win easily and the war would be over soon. At the Battle of Bull Run, however, the Union army was not well trained and did not follow orders well. They retreated. By the end of the day over 4000 soldiers were dead and the Union realized the Confederate soldiers were serious about fighting back.

Robert Anderson led Union soldiers to take control of a Fort in Charleston Harbor. The people in Charleston were angry that the Union soldiers took the fort because it was on Southern soil. Confederate soldiers took control of nearby forts because they wanted to get the Union soldiers away from Southern soil. President Lincoln ordered that supplies be sent to the Union soldiers, but the confederates sent out messengers to Major Anderson, asking him to surrender. Anderson would not. As a result, on April 12, 1861, the Confederates started firing on the Fort. The Civil War had officially begun. However, no one was killed on this day. What events did I just describe?
