What has the Inca Maiden's mummy revealed about its society?
The Ice Maiden, also known as the "Ampato Maiden," or "Juanita," was a young Inca girl discovered in 1995 near the top of a mountain in the high Andes. She had been killed as an offering to the mountain god more than 500 years earlier and, because of the high altitude, her body had been deep frozen and preserved. She was fully clothed, wrapped in cloth, and had with her a collection of grave goods: bowls, pins, and figurines made of gold, silver, and shell. This find, and finds of other sacrificial victims, can tell us a great deal about Inca society. Their clothing and grave goods tell us about technology-we can learn about textiles, metallurgy, and shell work. Their bodies tell us about the health and diseases of the Inca peoples, while the location of their graves confirms the impressive ability of the Incas to reach the highest mountain peaks without modern mountaineering aids. Finally, their unnatural deaths help us understand the religious beliefs of people who believed that human sacrifice was necessary to please the gods.

What is the main difference between Inca and Maya civilizations?
The main difference is that the Inca culture lasted for less than 200 years (A.D. 1440s-mid 1500s) in the present region of Peru, which is in South America, but the Mayan culture lasted for more than a thousand years, from about A.D. 400 to 1500, and flourished in the region of the Yucatan, which is in Mexico. The Maya kingdom emerged around B.C. 1000, and lasted until A.D. 1697. All Maya shared a common culture and religion, but they did not have a capital city or ruler. Each city governed itself and had its own powerful ruler. The Maya had their own form of hieroglyphic writing. The Inca empire was located in the highlands of the Andes in South America. They flourished between A.D. 1438 and 1534. Your local or school library will have wonderful books about these two amazing cultures. Their beautiful pottery and colorful costumes are awesome -- you will really want to check them out in books with good illustrations.

What specific artifacts were found along with "Ice Maiden"? Also, how have they provided information about the culture of their people?
The "Ice Maiden’" also known as the Ampato Maiden or Juanita, was a young Inca girl discovered in 1995 by archaeologist Johan Reinhard near the top of a mountain in the high Andes in Peru. She had been killed as an offering to the mountain god more than 500 years earlier. She was fully clothed, wrapped in cloth, and had with her a collection of grave goods: bowls, pins, and figurines made of gold, silver, and shell. Due to the high altitude, her body had been deep frozen. Junanita was not the only Inca sacrificial victim. The frozen, freeze-dried, and partially dehydrated bodies have provided archaeologists with good biological information. Scientists have been able to determine blood types, and even identify a wart-causing virus. The clothing of the victims (some were naked) has proved useful in reconstructing daily life. The discovery of these bodies, or natural mummies, helps archaeologists to understand the brief records left by the Spanish colonials who recorded details of the Inca ceremonies.

What did the Aztecs do for fun
The Aztecs enjoyed a vigorous ball game called tlachtli, which was played on a large court with a hard rubber ball. The aim was to hit the ball through a stone hoop using only the hips and the knees. Goals were unusual, and the game stopped when someone scored. Many Aztecs gambled on the results of the game, and some lost all their possessions because of it. In quieter moments, the Aztecs appreciated story telling and poetry

What was Aztec schooling like for kids?
Aztec boys and girls were brought up differently. Boys were expected to be brave warriors, fishermen, farmers, and craftsmen, like their fathers. Girls were expected to follow their mothers, to work indoors managing the household and bringing up the children. Both girls and boys were trained for these roles from an early age. Children were taught at home until about 15 years of age, but all Aztec children, boys and girls, were expected to attend school for some time when they were between 10 and 20 years old. The schools that most of the population attended were called telpochcalli. Boys lived at the school to receive their military training, which was taught by experienced warriors. Girls also attended the telpochcalli, but we do not know if they lived there or stayed at home, and we do not know what they studied. Boys from wealthy homes and those who were considered gifted attended the calmecac, which was attached to a temple. Here boys learned to become priests and leaders as well as warriors. In both schools, the discipline was very strict.
