What is a design?
A design is a plan produced to show the look and function of an object before it is built.
100
How many independent variables are there in a fair test?
There is only one independent variable in a fair test.
100
What is a prototype?
A prototype is the first model of something.
100
What is a fair test?
A fair test is when only one thing, one independent variable, changes.
100
What is cargo?
Cargo is goods carried by ship, aircraft or motor vehicle.
200
True or false. A design is a drawing, or sketch, that is used to make a prototype.
True.
200
What is an independent variable?
An independent variable is the thing that changes in a test.
200
Why do you build a prototype?
You build and design a prototype to find a solution to a design problem.
200
What is an unfair test?
An unfair test has more than one independent variable.
200
True or false. Cargo are items that are being transported.
True. Cargo are goods that are being transported by aircraft, motor vehicle or ship.
300
True or False. This picture is an example of a design. Explain why it is true or false.
False. The picture is an image of a prototype, not a design because it is made with materials similar to the actual item that will be produced.
300
What is a controlled variable?
A controlled variable is the thing that stays the same in a fair test.
300
True or false. A prototype is made with the same materials that are used in the actual item.
False. A prototype is made with cheaper, less expensive materials that are similar to the actual item.
300
True or false. A fair test has more than one independent variable.
False. A fair test only has one independent variable.
300
True or false. An important consideration of transporting cargo is that it should be transported safe and quickly to the next location.
True. Cargo should be transported carefully in order to make sure the goods get to the location safely and without damage.
400
What comes first: the design or the prototype?
The design comes first. The prototype is made based on the design.
400
True or false. My scientific test is whether sugar dissolves faster in cold water or hot water. In a fair test, my independent variable is the type of sugar that is being used and the temperature of the water.
False. In a fair test, only one thing can change. You can only have one independent variable. In this test, the only thing that would change is the temperature of the water. The type of sugar would stay the same in both of the tests.
400
True or false. A prototype only needs to go through one trial before being made into the actual machine.
False. A prototype should go through a series of trials and tests to make sure that the results are accurate, before it is made.
400
How many controlled variables are in a fair test?
Trick question! There are many controlled variables because it is everything that is staying the same in a test. There is not a certain required number of controlled variables in each test though.
400
True or false: T-shirts, jeans, video games and food are all considered cargo.
True. Cargo is are goods, which are things that you can buy in a store.
500
Why would you want to make a design before the prototype is made? Give one reason.
You would want to make a design before the prototype to help to think more about the problem you are solving. When you make a design before the prototype, you have a plan that will help you produce the design.
500
My scientific question: Can I get read faster if I am talking or when I am silent? What is the independent variable?
The independent variable is if I am talking or not.
500
True or false, and explain your answer. An example of a prototype is the newest Star Wars toy that is being sold in Toys 'R Us.
False. This is not a prototype because a prototype is the first model of something. It is not something that is sold in stores.
500
Identify why this test is unfair, and explain why. Scientists are researching whether trees go faster in Chicago verse Orlando, Florida. The scientists are unable to plant new trees so they use existing trees to measure and gather data. They are changing what type of tree they are using, and the location of where the tree is growing.
The scientists are changing more than one thing, or independent variable, which makes the test unfair. The two things they are changing are where the tree is growing and type of tree. They can only change one thing for the test to be fair.

Name two ways that cargo is transported.
Cargo is transported by aircraft, motor vehicle or ship.
