What causes an asthma attack?
A trigger.
100
It runs in the family, can be passed on. What is the term used for this cause?
Genetic
100
Name the classic signs of an acute attack?
Cough, wheezing, dyspnea
100
Is health and history an important component when diagnosing an asthma patient?
Yes
100
Name a LABA and a SABA?
Albuterol and Salmeterol
200
What is our defense mechanism to a trigger?
The inflammatory process.
200
What are some triggers to an asthma attack?
Cigarette smoke, dust, cockroaches, pollens, perfume, cold, dry air, URI.
200
Is decreased wheezing a good indicator that patient is breathing more effectively?
No, it is a life threatening situation that may require mechanical ventilation.
200
During a health and history, what findings would be significant?
Patient triggers, history of GERD, obesity, vocal cord dysfunction. Signs and symptoms
200
True or False. SABA such as albuterol is a rescue inhaler. LABA such as Salmeterol is a maintenance inhaler.
True
300
What are the physiological features of the airway during an asthma attack?
Airway edema, accumulation of secretions and bronchoconstriction
300
What medications are known to trigger an attack in some cases?
NSAIDs, Asprin and Beta blockers
300
When you see a patient sitting upright with shoulders in, hunched-over position, hands on bed or chair, and arms braced, what is that called?
Tripod position
300
What are the diagnostic tools used to diagnose asthma?
Peak flow and incentive spirometer.
300
What are the mechanism of action of Albuterol and Salmeterol?
Albuterol is a beta adrenergic agonist that acts on smooth muscle of bronchi. It also blocks histamine release from mast cells during the inflammatory process, Causing bronchodialation. Salmeterol is a beta adrenoreceptor agonist that stimulate the receptors to bronchorelax and increase ciliary motility to help expectorate.
400
Is it more difficult for a patient to inspire or expire during breathing?
Expire
400
Is swimming a trigger to an asthma attack?
NO, it is actually beneficial because of the air moisture and because of the type of breathing.
400
Is retractions and use of accessory muscles a significant sign?
yes, because patient is working harder to breath, need to intervene.
400
True or False. Peak Flow measures. Green is 80-90% asthma is in good control. Yellow is 40-79% asthma is not under well control need to call doctor. Red is <40% medical alert need to go to hospital.
False. Yellow is 50-79 and Red is <50
400
What are the side effects of Albuterol and Salmeterol?
can cause oral thrush, tachycardia, tremor, nervousness, dry mouth, increase blood pressure.
500
During an asthma attack what type of muscle causes the bronchoconstriction?
The smooth muscle surrounding the bronchioles.
500
Name some sports that will trigger an exercise induced bronchospasm?
Soccer, basketball, running.
500
True or False. A person with asthma will have increase cough manifestations in the morning and at night.
True
500
How does a patient use a peak flow meter?
Move the indicator to bottom of scale, Stand up, take a deep breath, filling lungs completely, place mouthpiece in mouth and close lips, and blow out as hard and fast as they can.
500
How would a patient inspire with a MDI vs a DPI?
MDI is inspired slowly and a DPI is inspired fast.
