Dred Scott decision - Dred Scott was a slave. His owner took him to a state where slavery was not legal. According to the law Scott would be freed. Scott filed a lawsuit. The Supreme Court ruled that Scott is a piece of property and he could not file a lawsuit. This promoted sectionalism because it was considered the most racist court decision. John Brown raids- John Brown was a radical abolitionist. He lead multiple raids to spark slave revolts. One of the most important raids cam on October 16, 1859. Brown lead 16 white men and 5 African Americans on a raid to spark a slave revolt. In the raid he took 60 prisoners from the local militia. The United States Marines came in killed 10 of Brown’s men, including his 2 sons. Brown was taken prisoner and he was executed for treason. This lead to sectionalism because the South know look as abolitionist as killers. 1860 election- In the Election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the election against his rivals. This lead to sectionalism because the South did not like the Lincoln. Missouri Compromise (1820)- The Missouri Compromise resolved issues between slave and free states by making the Arkansas Territory open to slavery, and the Unorganized Territory closed to slavery. They slit the two in half by the 36 30 line. Then the made Maine a state. This lead to sectionalism because when a state, correction to the map had to be made. Compromise of 1850- Under the Compromise of 1850 one part of the California would enter the Union as a Free State. Then the territories of Utah and New Mexico would vote on the slavery idea. A line that divided New Mexico and Texas was drawn. There were not strict Fugitive Slave Laws. Lastly slave trade was made illegal in Washington D.C.
