They both fought in war. Also, Athena and Ares could both be a bit harsh. Ares demonstrates this because others don't seem to like him, he is merciless in war, and he is the least favorite child of Zeus. Athena is harsh when Aracne hurts her pride, and so she turns her into a spider. Athena was compassionate and only fought for just causes, whereas Ares loved to see bloodshed and didn't care who won or lost.
