Surprise Me!
100
The outermost layer of the earth
crust
100
The release of energy along a fault causes this
earthquake
100
What are two evidences that support the temperature of Earth's interior?
lava from volcanoes, and hot water coming from geysers
100
A scientist discovers that a earthquake with a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale has struck Jefferson City. Describe the effects of this earthquake.
There is no effect at all. Earthquakes of this magnitude are hardly felt on the surface.
100
What is the Ring of Fire?
The Ring of Fire is an outline of earthquakes and volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean.
200
The solid upper mantle and the crust make this up
lithosphere
200
Earth's innermost layer
core
200
the thinnest layer of Earth
crust
200
What is the famous fault located in California?
The San Andreas fault is the famous fault located in California.
200
Which of the following can cause a new ocean to form between continents? a. faulting b. volcanoes c. earthquakes d. plate movements
plate movements
300
The point underground where faulting occurs (the point at which an earthquake originates)
focus
300
molten rock is called this; it flows to Earth's surface called lava
magma
300
Earth's thickest layer! (it's almost 2,000 miles thick!)
mantle
300
What are the 3 types of plate boundaries, and how do they move?
converging boundaries - plates move towards each other diverging boundaries - plates move away from each other sliding boundaries - plates slide up and down moving in opposite directions
300
Over the years, erosion changes a mountain range by making the peaks do what? a. more jagged b. taller c. shorter and rounder
shorter and rounder
400
The layer of the earth between the crust and the outer core
mantle
400
a crack in the crust along which rocks move
fault
400
Earth's HOTTEST layer
inner core
400
What are plate tectonics?
Plate tectonics is the idea of giant plates of rock moving slowly across the Earth's surface
400
How are dome mountains formed?
Dome mountains are formed when magma rises up from the mantle of the Earth, but doesn't break through the surface
500
Shock waves of energy energy released in an earthquake
seismic waves
500
When magma pushes up from beneath Earth's crust forming this
dome mountains
500
Earth's only layer that is made of liquid
outer core
500
How are volcanoes both constructive and destructive?
Volcanoes are constructive because it will erupt over and over making new land. This is caused from the rock and ash building up. They are also destructive because it will kill anything that's in it's path. The lava can be approximately 2,000 degrees!
500
Name the 4 layers of the earth (in order) Name the 4 mountain types (in any order) How is an earthquake measured?
4 layers of the Earth - crust, mantle, outer core, inner core 4 mountains - fold, fault-block, dome, volcanic An earthquake is measured using the Richter Scale.
