Andrea, Caucasian Female, 6 years old, loves animals, dance, and princesses, very sociable, mostly only reads in school.

What did I learn about myself?
I learned that helping a struggling reader is much harder than it looks. I underestimated how challenging it is. I feel prepared to meet the needs of the students in my own class room after this course.

How does Andrea approach reading a word she does not know?
She says that she sounds the word out. She actually guesses anything that pops in her head.

What did I learn about struggling lower level readers?
I learned that struggling readers need to be engaged in what you are teaching because they have negative associations with reading. The interests of the child is extremely important in order to keep to student interested and engaged.

First lesson she had a great attitude. Second lesson she had trouble with sequencing.

I learned that differentiation is difficult because you must meet the needs of all learners.

What did I learn about a Basic Reading Inventory and why is it important?
I learned that a BRI is needed in order to find out what the student does or does not know. It is very technical because you need to collect the correct data.

Differentiated Literacy Instruction is the use of a balanced approach to teaching literary concepts using word work, fluency, comprehension, and writing in order to meet the needs of diverse learners and to ultimately reach the goal of fluency in reading, writing, and speaking.

What are examples of when she follows this theory?
Ex: When reading Judy B Jones Thanksgiving she asked who has to do chores at their house. Ex. When teaching new trick words she asked what the old words were first.
