Layers of the Atmosphere
100

Transfer of heat through direct contact

What is conduction?

100

A symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit

I.e. Bee and flower

What is mutualism?

100

the periodic, often seasonal, movement of organisms from one habitat to another, typically involving a return journey to the starting point, in response to environmental factors like climate, food availability, or reproductive needs

What is migration?

100

An event that changes an ecosystem, such as fire, storm, or human activity.

What is a disturbance?

100

The outermost layer of the atmosphere

What is the exosphere?

200

The location where convection currents are found in within the Earth

The mantle

200

Whales and barnacles

What is commensalism?

200

morphological adaptation in which one species evolves to resemble another species for protection or other advantages

What is mimicry?

200

The first plants to return after a disturbance in primary succession

What are lichens and mosses? (pioneer species)

200

The layer of the atmosphere where meteors burn up

What is the mesosphere?
300

The Earth is _____ on its imaginary axis at a 23.5 degree angle

tilted

300

Relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is harmed, i.e. a flea and a dog

What is parasitism?

300

The process by which one species splits into two or more species

What is speciation?

300
The type of succession that occurs after a disturbance that causes the ecosystem to have to restart, but leaves the soil layer in tact

What is secondary succession?

300

The layer that contains the ozone layer

What is the stratosphere?

400

The earth spins around its imaginary axis

What is rotation?

400

An environmental factor that causes a population to stop growing or decrease in size

What is limiting factor?

400
DOUBLE JEOPARDY: Describe what happened to the peppered moth species during the Industrial Revolution

They used to be a white/light color to camoflauge with pale birch trees. The smog from the Industrial revolution emissions coated the birch trees in black, so it became more advantageous for the moths with darker coloring. Over multiple generations, more darker moths survived and reproduced, so the overall population had more commonly dark coloring.

400

A stable, mature community that undergoes little change in species.

What is climax community?

400

The hottest layer of the atmosphere

What is the thermosphere?

500

The Earth is in constant orbit around the sun, caused by a gravitational pull. One orbit is about 365 days

What is revolution?

500

Population growth rate equation

What is growth rate = (births +immigration)- (deaths + emigration)

500

Over what time period does natural selection and adaptation occur?

What is multiple generations?

500

An example of a disturbance that would lead to secondary succession

fire, flooding, and other natural disasters

500

The layer of the atmosphere where weather occurs and contains the vast majority of air that we breathe

What is the troposphere?
