We will discuss our individual relationship to the planet. We will address what it means to be "green" as well as "sustainable" solutions. What do these terms mean for us as we go about our daily activities of getting from one place to the next, eating means, buying things, learning, and occasionally cleaning our living spaces?

Students must try to talk once during each class. Participation includes questions about the text, responses to classmates, interpretations of the texts, and connections between texts. Any contribution that is recognizably analytic, interpretive, reflective, or comparative will qualify. Students who do not participate can expect lowered grades.

Students will submit a portfolio of writing at the end of the semester. This will include a selection of the essays you have written over the semester. Important: save and carefully label each piece of work as a separate date file for the Portfolio; do not "write over" any existing files when drafting, and be sure to back up work consistently.

Possible essay topics are assigned for all Units. However, students may design their own topic around a question they have developed in response to an assigned text. If a student chooses his or her own topic, instructor approval is required.

Each essay will undergo revision and rewriting, with the assistance of peer review and instructor feedback (quality of both revision and peer review will be factored into the final grade for each essay).

You may miss one deadline for a 48-hour extension without a grade penalty. You may use this "buy" for either a first-, second- or final-draft deadline. The essay will have to be turned in, of course, but the extra time is often very helpful.
