What is a surface wind?

Wind near the surface of the earth

100

Where are jet streams found?

In high speed winds that exist in higher levels of the atmosphere

100

What are the 3 main factors that determine weather in an air mass?

Moisture content, cooling process, stability of the air

100

What is a front?

transition zone between 2 air masses, when they interact there is weather changes

100

What does WO1 Aw-Yeong do in her free time?

Fly of course!

200

Why do we have surface winds?

Friction between air and ground

200

Where do jet streams flow?

From west to east

200

Why is the cooling process important?

contributes to the formation of clouds

200

What is a cold front?

When cold air overtakes mass of warm air, cold air (denser) stays on surface and undercuts warm violently

200

Why is Vancouver called ‘’Raincouver’’?

  • Convergence of air masses -> polar and continental
  • Polar jet stream -> low pressure systems move east from the island
300

What kind and why do winds go down at night?

Katabatic and because air becomes cooler and denser

300

What is CAT stand for and what is it?

clear air turbulence, bumpy turbulent condition that occurs in a cloudless sky

300

What are features of stable and unstable air

stable air - stratus clouds, poor visibility, drizzle precipitation

unstable air - cumulus clouds, good visibility, showery precip

300

What is the order of clouds that will develop in a warm front?

Cirrus, Cirrostratus, Altostratus, Nimbostratus, Stratus (CCANS)

300

How do you read a wind barb?

each short line is 5 knots, each long line is 10 knots, points to direction wind is coming from

400

What are some dangers to aircraft of mountain waves?

Strong downdrafts, turbulence, wind shear, altimeter errors

400

where is CAT found and what is a danger?

found above 15000ft and most probable just above central core of a jet stream

it is hard to forecast so it can cause shock to the pilot

400
How are clouds formed?

Temperature is lowered to its dewpoint

400

What does a warm front look like on a GFA?

red semicircles

400

What is WO1 Aw-Yeong studying in university?

Health science!

500

What are gusts caused by? name 2 answers

Mechanical turbulence which results from friction between air and ground and by unequal heating of earth's surface called convection

500

What does GFA stand for and which GFA can you find jet streams and CAT?

graphical forecast for aviation and on the Icing, Turbulence & Freezing level chart

500

What is the difference between a warm and cold air mass?

Cold air masses - arctic and polar air masses

  • Instability, turbulence, good visibility, cumulus clouds, showery precipitation

Warm air mass - tropic

  • Stability, smooth air, poor visibility, stratus clouds, fog, drizzle

500

What is an occluded front and what does an occluded front look like on a GFA?

  • Wave like disturbance sometimes forms on a stationary front

  • Can develop into small low called depression - one section of front begins to move a warm front and the other section as a cold front

  • Overtime cold front overtakes warm front to form a single occluded front

  • Cold air catches up with itself as it flows around low pressure area

On a GFA, it is purple alternating semicircles and triangles
