How does the author’s decision to conclude the story with the phrase “Scout’s Honor” contribute to the story? Cite evidence from the text in your response.

1. Answers will vary; Correct answers will have two of the following details: the phrase “Scout’s honor” initially comes up when the narrator is speaking to Mr. Brenkmen. Mr. Brenkman asks, “‘You wouldn’t lie, would you? What about Scout’s honor?’” after the narrator asks how he can prove to the Scoutmaster that he went camping in the country (Paragraph 10). This emphasizes the importance of honesty, especially to members of the Boy Scouts. However, in order to fulfill his promise to Mr. Brenkman, the narrator must lie to his parents in order to go to the country, “We informed our folks that we were going camping overnight (which was true) and that the Scoutmaster was going with us – which was a lie” (Paragraph 25). Because of this lie, the boys find themselves unprepared for their camping trip and are unable to spend the night in the country. The narrator’s claim of “Scout’s Honor” at the end of the text is ironic because, he is making a promise to his friends to be dishonest to Mr. Brenkman, “Horse said, ’Only thing is, we just have to promise not to tell Mr. Brenkman’” (Paragraph 138). In the end, all the unfortunate events that the narrator and his friends went through could have been avoided if they were honest with their Scoutmaster, their parents, and each other.

Paragraph 3 reveals the Priest’s generosity and how selfish the Rich Man is. For instance, when the Priest sees how much the Rich Man gives the Poor Man, he asks, “‘My Rich Brother, can you not be more generous than this?’” Additionally, the Priest shows concern over how the Poor Man will purchase bread. While this paragraph shows how the Priest cares for the Poor Man’s wellbeing, it also reveals the extent of the Rich Man’s stinginess. For example, the Priest reveals that the Rich Man is “sending him away with only a penny or two.” In all, this paragraph brings attention to the Priest’s giving nature and the Rich Man’s selfish nature.
