What is erosion? pg 44

The process of wearing away parts of rock and soil by the action of wind, water and ice, and the transportation of the material to new locations

100

What is weathering? pg 44

A long, slow process that breaks rocks and minerals into small pieces.

100

Name a cause of erosion

Water, wind, extreme weather events

100

Name one cause of weathering.

Water, plant roots, wind, temperature and acid in rainwater.

200

What does erosion affect more: soil or rocks?

Soil

200

What does weathering affect more: soil or rocks?

Rocks

200

Name one way to prevent erosion.

Building barriers with rocks or wood, ice, plant roots

200

Name one way to prevent weathering

Wind barriers, filling in cracks in rocks, using salt to prevent from freezing

300

How can plants help prevent erosion?

Plant roots hold on to soil helping it from being taken away by erosion.

300

How does water cause weathering?

Water seeps into the cracks and then freezes. The ice expands, the cracks become bigger and over time the rock breaks off

400

How can ice help prevent erosion?

Ice freezes over the coastal landscape and then the waves crash on the ice wearing it down instead of the coastline

400

How can plants cause weathering?

Plant roots grow in the cracks of the rocks. As the roots grow larger they can cause pieces of the rocks to break off.

500

What is one way PEI is helping to prevent erosion?

Building barriers, discouraging people from building on the coast, intertidal reefs

500

How can temperature cause weathering?

The temperature can cause the rock to expand and contract which can cause the rocks to crack and pieces of the rocks to break off.

When the rock is colder is contracts and when it is warm is expands.
