What's the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset?

The biggest difference between a fixed mindset and growth mindset is in the beliefs around intelligence and talent.

People with a fixed mindset see abilities as static and unable to move or develop, leading them to avoid challenges for fear of appearing unintelligent or incompetent and viewing effort as a sign of low ability.

Those that display a growth mindset believe that intelligence and skills are a starting point and can be developed through dedication, hard work and feedback. Failure isn't a reflection of their worth but actually necessary for improvement, and effort is seen as the essential path of mastery.

Growth mindsets see obstacles as opportunities to test themselves and to grow.

Explain how using the word, 'yet' can change your outlook.

The word, 'yet' acts as a bridge between failure and future mastery. When a learner says, "I can't do this," they create a psychological dead-end - a symptom of a fixed mindset.

By adding the word, 'yet', it fundamentally shifts the perspective suddenly toward a path of progression which will result in success. This tiny addition helps the person to acknowledge there's a lack of skill, but that's only temporary rather than a permanent stop.

It reframes the struggle as part of a timeline, signalling to the brain that it's time to put effort in to get over this obstacle - thus causing a reaction in neuroplasticity and making our brains literally grow through persistence.

Person praise focuses on innate qualities or fixed traits, such as telling a student they are 'smart' or 'naturally gifted'. While this feels positive, it actually can foster a fixed mindset by making the person afraid to fail as that would mean they lose that 'smart' label.

On the other hand, process praise targets the effort made, strategies used, focus given and persistence the individual employed to reach their goal. By praising the method rather than the person, the idea that success is actually brought about as a result of controllable actions and encourages resilience and willingness.
