What is the Republican party? (1824) They choose William H. Crawford and John Quincy Adams (one of the Favorite Sons). There was also Andrew Jackson for the Democrats and Henry Clay for the Whigs, but technically the Whigs are not a party yet, but they eventually will be.

Tell me everything you know about the Election of 1828 and what new things were introduced.
So, if you must ask that question, then let me explain everything...
In 1828, The Republican party splits, and you might be thinking "oh no! Will there still be the Republican party?" In fact, yes. They become known as the National Republicans who came from the Federal party and were now run by John Quincy Adams. They wanted a strong government with a national bank to help facilitate growth. The Democrats were run by Andrew Jackson like Thomas Jefferson. They wanted a weak government and are in support of states' rights. During the campaigns, there was mudslinging (an attempt to ruin another person's reputation with insults) involved, slogans, buttons, and rallies. Jackson got the most votes from the frontier states and the South. Believe it or not, but, John C. Calhoun of South Carolina was Adams vice president but then he was like "nope, later" and joined Jackson. Jackson won the election against by a lot and the Democratic party took office.

What happened in 1828 for voting rights? What was Andrew Jackson doing to the government?
In nearly all the states, the voters chose the presidential electors and NOT the legislature. Jackson took office in 1829 and began firing federal workers and replaced them with his supporters. This caused many to think of Jackson as a tyrant. This system became known as the Spoils System. His supporters abandoned the caucus system and began using nominating conventions. This allowed more people to participate in the selection of presidential candidates.

Tell me everything you know about the Tariff Debate of 1828.
ok, so...
High tariffs were passed on European stuff which made the North East happy but the South angry. It encouraged the people to buy American goods since they were now cheaper than the new tariffs on European goods. The South HAD a profitable trade in Europe but the tariff messed everything up. It was passed by John Quincy Adams, the president. Then, vice president John C. Calhoun said that states can nullify something if the federal law is not in the states' interests. Andrew Jackson was like "nope, that's not a good idea at all because it is just going to destroy our Union." Jackson wants to preserve the Union, but Calhoun is like "yeah, but the states' rights to nullify are more important." After this, the Maysville Road Bill is passed to provide federal money to build a road within KT. Jackson vetoes it because he like "why should we have to pay if it does not benefit the whole nation. It only benefits KT, so KT should pay." Then, in 1832, a lower tariff is passed but there are still protests. SC passes the Nullification Act saying that it does not pay illegal tariffs and threatened to withdraw from the Union if the government interfered. Jackson is still like "I love a strong union, so I am going to pass the Force Bill to allow enforcement on federal law if nobody is going to listen to me." SC nullifies the Force Bill but accepts the new tariff.
