What was the Big Bang?

The moment that the universe began to expand.

100

A police car driving past you, a wolf howling and running towards a person, a man playing a trumpet as he skis down a hill - these are all examples of what?

The Doppler Effect

100

Name the 7 types of electromagnetic radiation.

Radio, Microwave, Infrared, Visible, Ultraviolet, XRay, Gamma

100

What does CMB stand for?

Cosmic Microwave Background

100

What happens to light waves as they are redshifted?

They stretch out, wavelength increases.

200

How old is the universe?

About 13.6 billion years old.

200

The Doppler Effect is three things - name them!

1. Evidence for the Big Bang 2. A natural law of physics 3. A cool Halloween costume

200

Which color of visible light has the shortest wavelength?

Blue

200

What form of electromagnetic radiation was the CMB originally?

Heat and light

200

What happens to light waves as they are blueshifted?

They get closer together, wavelength decreases.

300

What is still happening to our universe today as a result of the Big Bang?

It is still expanding.

300

How does the frequency of the soundwaves change as the source of sound moves toward the observer?

Frequency increases, the sound sounds more high pitched.

300

As energy increases, frequency...

also increases.

300

Why did the light and heat of the Big Bang eventually become micorwaves?

The light waves stretched as the universe expanded.

300

Does redshift indicate that the source of light is moving away from the observer or toward the observer?

Away from the observer.

400

What was the universe like before the Big Bang?

very small, dense, and hot

400

What is wrong with this statement: The Doppler Effect is how noises become louder when they are closer to the observer.

The Doppler Effect is NOT about volume, only about frequency/ pitch.

400

As wavelength increases, frequency...

Decreases.

400

What temperature (in K) does the CMB have?

2.7K

400
What method do scientists use to observe redshift?

Spectroscopy

500

Describe one theory for how the universe might end.

Big Rip (universe will tear apart)

Big Crunch (universe will contract again)

Big Freeze (universe will expand forever and completely run out of energy)

:)

500

What is a source of gamma waves on Earth?

Nuclear explosions.

500

Name the two scientists who first detected the CMB.

Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson (or Penzias and Wilson)

500

Why is redshift evidence for the Big Bang?

According to the Doppler Effect, waves stretch out as their source moves away from the observer. The light of distant galaxies is stretching out (redshifted). This means that everything in the universe is moving away from Earth and the universe is expanding. It has been expanding since the Big Bang.
