Random Facts about Mr. Shin
100

Tracing these "things" by digging them up from sedimentary rock can show us how organisms evolved over time.

What are fossils

100

This "thing" comprises of all the possible genes/genotypes of a population

What is gene pool

100

A barrier is made between two populations, reproductively isolating them

What is geographic isolation

100

Finches with various beak sizes. Certain finches that happen to have a good beak for a certain seed will evolve to eat that seed and pass on its genes.

What is Darwin

100

The country that Mr. Shin was born in

What is Korea

200

Kangaroos, for some interesting reason, are only found in Australia. Hmm...

What is geographic distribution

200

Legs that are too long make ostrich wobbly. Legs that are too short make ostrich run slower. Legs that are medium/average length are just right.

What is stabilizing selection

200

Different mating seasons cause reproductive isolation

What is temporal isolation
200

Giraffes decide to grow long necks and pass on their genes for long necks to their offspring, increasing their fitness.

What is Lamarck

200

The college that Mr. Shin goes to

What is Brandeis University

300

There are few differences in the amino acid order for a certain protein between humans and primates

What is genetic code (DNA)

300

It helps to have either very small fins or very big fins.

What is disruptive selection

300

Red seaweed only grows in the bottom of Finn Lake inside the narrow holes of coral. Blue seaweed only grows in the open near the shore of Finn Lake. One group of turtles have very very narrow, pointy mouths. Another group have wide, big mouths. The two groups become reproductively isolated.

What is ecological isolation

300

A group of birds arrive in Texas. They realize that they shedding their feathers (due to the hot weather) will make them cool down and adapt better. The birds pass on their genes to shed feathers.

What is Lamarck

(Lamarck = acquired. Darwin = inherited).

300

Ms. Sarah Shin

(this person is sort of important to Mr. Shin

Who is Mr. Shin's sister

400

Tail bones

What is vestigial structure

400

The longer the antlers for stags (male deer), the better.

What is Directional selection
400

Some female blue penguins hunt for tuna fish in a particular fishing location to attract a mate. Other female blue penguins hunt for tuna fish in another fishing location to attract a mate. Red and purple penguins, living in the same area, do not like tuna fish.

Behavioral isolation

400

Geckos exhibit variation in the length of their tails. One day it is suddenly advantageous to have short tails and have shorter tails increase fitness. Geckos with shorter tails become lucky and pass on their genes.

What is Darwin

400

Walnuts

What is Mr. Shin allergic to

500

Same structure, different function

What is homologous structure

500

Gene frequency stays exactly the same over the years.

What is genetic equilibrium

500

A liger or mule that cannot reproduce.

What is genetic incompatibilities

500

Certain squid can camouflage with their environment and hide from predators. Some squids happen to be "better" and "faster" at camouflaging than other squids. The squids decide when to camouflage and their decision to camouflage increases their fitness. The squids that can camouflage more quickly pass on their genes

What is Darwin
