What were the key observations from Rutherford’s gold foil experiment, and how did these findings lead to the development of his atomic model?

Rutherford bombarded gold foil with a stream of small, positively charged particles. The majority of the particles passed through the foil undeflected, however, sometimes the particles were deflected at large angles or bounced back in the direction from which they had come.

Rutherford concluded that atoms contain mostly empty space and a dense, positively charged core. Electrons have little mass and are dispersed in the empty space in the atom surrounding the nucleus.
