an early school of psychological thought that focused primarily on how the mind allows people to function in the real world-- how people work, play, and adapt to their surroundings.
What is functionalism

What is the part of our autonomic nervous system that is active when you are startled?
What is The sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight)

This Man made a study in which cats were put in a Puzzle Box
Who is Edward Thorndike pg. 131
100
What is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes
What is psychology?

What is the difference between Afferent and Efferent neurons?
What is Efferent (Motor Neurons) - carries a signal from the brain to parts of the body responsible for movement, etc. Afferent (Sensory Neurons) - nerves carry signals to the brain from all over the body so that the brain can act on those signals.

Which descriptive method provides tremendous amounts of detail, but isn't applicable to a general population?
What is a case study?
200
What are the two basic functions of neurotransmitters?
What is To allow functions to happen (excitatory) and to inhibit functions (inhibitory).
200
What is the Law of effect?
What is The law stating that if an action is followed by a pleasurable experience it will be repeated. If followed by an unpleasant experience, it will not be repeated. Pg. 131
200
What is the difference between the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system?
What is Somatic: carries information from the senses to the CNS and from the CNS to the voluntary muscles of the body Autonomic: division of the PNS consisting of nerves that control all the involuntary muscles, organs, and glands.
200
What is an SSRI and why is it effective?
What is Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. In some individuals, the normal process of serotonin adjustment isn’t working properly (serotonin is either not produced or not released in large enough amounts, so it can’t fully activate the receptors in the next neuron.) An SSRI blocks the reuptake of serotonin, leaving more serotonin available in the synapse to bind with receptor sites.

Mitchell has been to medical school school and specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. His job title is (Hint: doctor is not a complete answer).
What is a Psychiatrist or Doctor of psychiatry

What are the four lobes of the brain and their functions?
What is Occipital—bottom of the cerebral hemisphere containing visual centers of the brain. Parietal—top and back of each cerebral hemisphere containing centers for taste, touch, and temperature sensations Temporal—located along the side, starting just below the temples containing neurons responsible for the sense of hearing and meaningful speech Frontal—located font top, responsible for higher mental processes and decision making as well as the production of fluent speech

Name a secondary reinforcement
What is Usually money pg. 133

Who is Little Albert, and what study was he a part of?
What is Little albert by James Watson. He conditioned fear into albert by making loud noises when a white fuzzy mouse was nearby. Albert is now afraid of all things white and fuzzy (stimulus generalization) such as a mask, a scarf and a rabbit that are all white and fuzzy. Pg. 128

Dr. Mitchell collaborates with Cat Stewart PhD, who is interested in the way ketamine antagonizes NMDA receptors in the brain, wants to know if midazolam is an agonist or antagonist of NMDA receptors. She also wants to see how it changes the behavior of the patients. Cat most closely associates with what psychological perspective.
What is the biopsychological perspective
400
List the 7 modern psychological perspectives
What are the psychodynamic, behavioral, humanistic, cognitive, sociocultural, biopsychological, and evolutionary perspectives.
400
What part of the brain would a person least want to have damaged? Why?
What is Medulla. It controls life-sustaining functions such as heartbeat, breathing, and swallowing.

You hate your roommate. You hate having a roommate. Your parents promise you that if you get good grades this semester you can have a private room next year. This is an example of…
What is Positive reinforcement

Dr. Mitchell randomly assign specific patients to a particular drug without informing the nurses (who primarily are responsible for observing the patients), and tells all the patients they are receiving an experimental drug (but doesn't tell them which one.) This represents what type of experiment design?
What is a double-blind study.
400
How do neurons use neurotransmitters to communicate?
What is Inside synaptic vesicles are neurotransmitters. During action potential, neurotransmitters are released from the synaptic vesicles into the synaptic gap and float across to the next cell, where many of them fit into receptor sites, opening ion channels which allow the sodium to rush in and the next cell to be activated.
500
In research statistics, "r" is used to describe what?
What is the strength and direction of a relationship.
500
Which of the endocrine glands is known as the “master gland?”
What is Pituitary gland. Gland located in the brain that secretes human growth hormone and influences all other hormone-secreting glands.

Give an example in the text of Learned Helplessness
What is Martin Seligman’s Dog that gets electrocuted no matter what side of the box he’s on. He gives up and give up on jumping entirely. Pg. 151

Describe action potential in a neuron.
What is Happens when a signal is being sent through a neuron; neuron is in an excited state; threshold is met or exceeded, allowing the neuron to fire; positive sodium ions enter the neuron through the cell membrane; charge goes from negative to positive. All-or-none.

Your roommate has 100 pairs of shoes and she leave them all over the room blocking the bathroom in the kitchen its everywhere. You tell her to get a bin for her shoes or just take some home or something. She doesn’t listen. So you periodically take one shoe away (not a pair, one shoe) every two days.
