Short! This is your RESCUE MED!
Used during an ACUTE phase od an asthmatic attack to quickly reduce airway constriction and restore airflow.
Tachycardia, anxiety, tremors, nausea, (palpitations, increased HR)
Monitor, monitor, monitor! O2 sat, RR, lung sounds before/after administration.

Used for PREVENTION
Airway relaxation and dilation *
Dry mouth or throat
Give patient ice chips, fluids, hard candy

2. Normal ranges for PaO2:
3. Normal ranges for HCO3:
1. PaCO2: 35-45
2. PaO2: 80-100* is the patient on oxygen?
3. HCO3: 22-26 (guys BICARBs [buy cars] between 22 and 26 :)
40-60% and minimum of 5L
AND
Describe the mechanism of action1. hydrochloroTHIAZIDE (HCTZ) inhibits sodium and water absorption while promoting potassium, bicarb and magnesium excretion.
2. Furosemide (Lasix) inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption from the loop of henle.
3. Spironolactone (Aldactone) promotes water and sodium excretion and potassium retention.
I am used for COPD patients, what is my FIO2% and liters?
Venturi Mask
24-50%
6-11L
Name TWO SELECTIVE Beta Adrenergic Blockers and their mechanism of action
Name TWO NON-SELECTIVE Beta Adrenergic Blockers and their mechanism of action
Describe the difference between selective and non-selective.
A. Metoprolol (Lopressor) and Atenolol (Tenormin)
B. Carvedilol (Corgard) and Labetalol (Tandrate)
C. Selective only affects the HEART vs. Non-selective that affects other organs (i.e., Lungs)
My FIO2 is 60-75% and I am used at 6-11L
Partial Rebreather
Name a CORTICOSTEROID
What are the preferred routes of administration?
Describe the mechanism of action.

What can be a nursing intervention
Asmanex (mometasone)
MDI or DPI and IV if SEVERE
Prevents inflammation. Reduce airway inflammation and/or mucous production. (pg 575)
May affect adrenal glands (adrenal suppression), bone growth is suppressed in kids when given in large doses.
Instruct the patient to "SLOW + LOW to diminish the risk for adrenal suppression. Remember that the adrenals are on vacation :) also have patients rinse their mouth :P
Non-rebreather mask is greater than ____% FIO2
10 to ___L
True or False: I am not used for LONG TERM
