Della and Jim are in a relationship and want to get something special for the other person. In order to do so, they must give up something valuable to themselves. In the end, the other person got something that was supposed to go with the valuable item that the person sacrificed so the gifts were useless in the end. The author shows that items can be meaningless when used to show our love for another.
