Name the simple machines.

Wedge, lever, screw, inclined plane, wheel and axle.
100

____________ is the property that describes the amount of a matter in a substance.

Mass

100

Why is a robot not a living thing? Give 3 characteristics.

Does not have cells.

Does not adapt.

Does not grow.

Does not make exchanges with environment (usually)

100

___________ of the Earth on it's axis is the reason we have day and night.

Rotation

100

List the layers of the Earth from outermost to innermost.

Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core

200

Which simple machines provide a mechanical advantage?

Wedge, screw, 1st and 2nd class levers, movable and compound pulleys, wheel and axle.

What is temperature?

Temperature describes the degree of agitation of the particles of a substance. This means how fast they are moving as well as how many collisions are being made.

200

What is larger, a Kingdom or a Phylum?

Kingdom
200

The ________________ of the Earth around the Sun and the angle of the Earth's axis is why we have seasons.

Revolution

200

Which two layers make up the Lithosphere?

The crust and the mantle

300

How can you set up a 1st class lever for maximum MA?

Make the effort arm very long.

300

Which pH represents a neutral substance?

7

300

How can you test if two organisms are in the same species, assuming one is male and the other female?

similar behavioral and physical characteristics, offspring can reproduce.

300

What is the first phase of the moon following a new moon?

Waxing crescent

300

What type of rock is cooled lava?

Extrusive or intrusive igneous rock

400
What happens when you move the load closer to the effort, in a first class lever?

The MA decreases.

400

How would you balance a soup that has a pH of 3, if you wanted to make it less acidic?

You would add a substance that has a pH higher than 7 (alkaline), to help balance out the pH.

400

Make a statement that refers to a population.

Any statement about the number of a species in a specified area.

400

Why does the South Pole never experience daylight on June 21st?

On June 21st it is one of the two solstices, which is when the Earth is tilted the farthest away from the Sun in one of the hemispheres. In June, the Southern Hemisphere is angled away and the South Pole would never be able to rotate into the area of the Earth experiencing daylight due to the angle of the Earth's rotation and the Earth's location relative to the Sun.

400

______________ rock is rock that has changed due to being pushed deep below the Earth's surface.

Metamorphic rock

500

How does the size of the axle compared to the wheel affect MA?

The smaller the axle relative to the wheel, the more MA.

500

Describe 3 properties that you could test for in order to discover the identity of an unknown liquid, assuming you have lab equipment available.

You need to test for characteristic properties, which are ones that help you determine the identity of the substance.

Melting Point, Boiling Point, pH, density, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity would all be good choices.

Mass, volume, temperature, etc. would not tell you the identity of the substance.

500
Name all of the multicellular kingdoms.

Fungi, Plants, Animals

What is the first phase of the moon following a Full Moon?

Waning Gibbous

500

How could magma become sedimentary rock?

First, the magma would need to cool down and become either intrusive or extrusive igneous rock.

Then that rock needs to be weathered or eroded and broken up into small pieces called sediment.

That sediment would then get compacted (squeezed together) and eventually form as sedimentary rock.
