Define rotation and revolution in relation to earth.
Rotation - the time or movement where earth spins on its axis
Revolution - the time or movement where the earth moves around the sun
What is a waning moon?
A moon decreasing in size each night.
What causes tides on earth? Two factors
Pull of the sun and pull of the moon
What makes a resource natural?
Natural resources are materials from the Earth, including plants and animals, that are used to support life and meet people's needs
What is precipitation?
Any water (liquid or frozen) that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the earth eg. rain, sleet, and snow.
How long does it take for the earth to complete one rotation?
24hrs
The phases of the moon are due to what?
The Moon’s orbit around the Earth
What has the biggest gravitational pull on earths tides and why?
The moon - due to its closeness to us!
What is a non-renewable resource?
A resource that does not renew within a human lifetime and cannot be replenished when stocks run out.
All life on earth needs it to hydrate and survive (important for body processes)
How long does it take for the earth to complete one revolution? THINK CAREFULLY
365.25 days
True or False? A solar eclipse occurs at the time of the new moon and is when the moon is between the sun and the Earth, casting a shadow in space blocking part or all of the sun.
False
What is a neap tide?
A period of moderate tides when the sun and moon are at right angles to each other
What is one property that makes cotton a valuable resource?
Fibres are breathable, grows on a plant (renewable), easy to grow (little water), soft
Draw a diagram showing three parts of the water cycle.
Answers will vary
What causes day and night differences? 4 factors.
Tilt of the earth, rotation and revolution of the earth and the sun.
What is a solar eclipse?
At the time of a full moon when the Earth is between the sun and moon and it’s shadow falls on the moon.
What is a king tide?
The largest spring tide where the sun, moon and earth line up the gravitational pull of the moon and sun coordinated to increase size
What are the two sources of energy that are very alike? Describe why.
Water and wind energy - Both spin a turbine which uses a generator to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy.
State the three strategies to reduce the effect of drought and provide an example of each.
Water conversation - the practice of using water efficiently to reduce unnecessary water usage. e.g. fixing leaks
Water recycling - process where treated wastewater is used for a variety of purposes e.g. irrigating sporting grounds
Water harvesting - Refers to the process in which water is collected and used e.g. rainwater tanks. Also includes water desalination!
How does the tilt of the earth, rotation and revolution affect the way parts of the earth receive sunlight and and have night and day?
The part tilted closer to the sun receives more direct sunlight making it warmer. The way the earth rotates combined with this tilt is what causes differences in day and night hours. As the earth revolves this changes due to the fixed axis causing seasons.
Explain why the moon cycle takes 29 ½ days to complete
In only takes 27 1/3 days for the month to revolve around the earth but due to the earth also revolving around the sun our Moon must travel a little farther in its path to make up for the added distance.
Why are there two low and two high tides in every 24hr period?
High tides occurs on opposite sides of Earth as the ocean is pulled upward, but the planet is also pulled slightly toward the moon. This results in a bulge of water (high tide) on the both sides of Earth (opposite sides). As the earth rotates around once in 24hrs is moves through two of each.
Why is oil not considered a renewable resource if it is made from dead organisms?
Non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels are formed due to the prolonged decay of dead plants and animals. This takes far longer than a human lifetime.
List ways that precipitation and evaporation are different but opposite
Evaporation - removal of water into the air, up,gas state
Precipitation - return of water from the air, vapour/ice/snow/rain/sleet, down
