The movie El Norte started during the Civil War in Guatemala. The military were mean to the indigenous people. They were trying to take back the land from the indigenous people to create more coffee plantations and make more money for themselves. Therefore, the gov’t gave the military orders to take the indigenous people away or to kill them. Arturo was mad because he felt the land was theirs and wanted to fight for it. Arturo also believes that “to the rich, the peasant is just a pair of strong arms” and so he and other organizers want to form a labor union amongst the workers but are murdered by gov’t troops.
