When participating in a class discussion, you make comments and ask questions related to the topic being discussed.

Expected- the Teacher knows you are paying attention to the topic
I put my head down on my desk and do not participate or complete my work.

Unexpected- My teacher might worry about you or think I don't care
When doing quiet independent work you talk loudly to yourself.
Unexpected- others will not be able to work and may ask you to be quiet.
A teachers says good morning in the hallway. You look down. Expected or unexpected? Why?
Unexpected- It might be seen as rude to not respond.
Turn your body towards the person talking and look at them.

Expected- Others know you are thinking about the discussion and listening to them when they talk.
I do not get distracted by what other students might do in class.

Expected- Others will see me as a leader and look up to me in a positive way.
If you get stuck on an question, you may be able to work on another part of the task and come back to that part later.
Expected- the teacher will be able to help you when they have a moment and you won't get behind in your work.
A friend asks you what you did over the weekend and you talk about your dog for 2 minutes. Expected or unexpected?
Unexpected- You aren't staying on topic. Your friend asked about your weekend.
Add thoughts/ask questions that aren't related to the discussion.
