This primary source shows an insightful view into the inner thinkings of Commodore Perry, recounting his experiences and attitudes towards Japan. Commodore Perry instructed Captain Adams to listen to and hear all the Japanese had to say, but specifically could not share any unnecessary information or promise anything to them, showing both Perry’s and America’s uncertainty and caution of Japan. This fearfulness and hesitance towards Japan was also matched with a sense of superiority of the West over Japan, as Americans and Perry believed America to be a much more powerful force.
