DEI Basics
Occurs when a variety of individuals, groups, and/or communities with different characteristics exist together.
What is Diversity?
A particular group, culture, or community with which an individual identifies or shares a sense of belonging.
What is Identity Group?
Power and advantages benefiting a dominant identity group.
What is privilege?
Motive meaning to do harm
Evenly distributed access to resources.
What is Equality?
Having multiple identities that intersect like gender, race, sexual orientation, which sometimes can offer privilege in some ways, but not in others.
What is Intersectionality?
Overt, big actions based on prejudice that unfairly treat a person differently because of, or punish them for, an aspect of their identity.
A life-long commitment to having a respectful attitude towards people of other cultures.
What is Cultural Humility?
Cultivating an environment where anyone can be and feel welcomed, respected, and valued to fully participate.
What is Inclusion?
Groups that form naturally around common interests, made of people free to be themselves and interact with other groups.
What are Friend Groups?
Attitudes toward and stereotypes of other social groups that negatively affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an way that is below the surface.
What is Unconscious or Implicit Bias?
The effect an action had on a person, group, or community.
What is Impact?
Seeking fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all people.
What is Equity?
Groups that make outsiders feel less important and thrive when given power, using exclusion as a weapon against people they don't like.
What are cliques?
Brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to certain individuals because of their group membership.
What are Microaggressions?
A sense of fitting in or feeling like you are an important member of the group, able to show up authentically.
What is Belonging?
Downplaying or intentionally not disclosing a known stigmatized identity to fit in with the dominant culture.
