A ten year old boy, who battled with a crocodile in a river twenty kilometers from here, is now recovering from his wounds in the local hospital. But his left thigh bears twelve tooth marks, which will leave scars lasting the rest of his life. After proudly showing off his scars, the boy told a newspaper reporter this story. He was bathing in a river, with his friend, also ten year old, near the Kampong, where they both live. “I was splashing about in the shallow part of the river, near the bank, close to an old coconut stump which had been washed down by erosion. The stump saved my life, “the boy related. “Suddenly, I felt something grip me on the left leg, dragging me towards the middle of the river. I struggled hard and managed to get a grip on the roots of the old stump. At the same time, I shouted for help, but none came.” His friend, meanwhile, had scrambled up the bank to safety. The boy said that he did not realize that a crocodile has seized him until he saw its tail threshing the water. “When I saw what it was, he went on breathlessly, “I held all the more tightly to the coconut roots, and using my left hand, I started to beat the crocodile. Then with my left hand and right leg I managed to force open its jaws and get free. I climbed up on to the stump and hobbled off to tell my father.”

The art of printing is a process simple enough in itself, and indeed well known from remote ages. Every Egyptian or Babylonian who smeared some black on his signet ring or engraved cylinder, and took off a copy, had made the first step towards printing. But easy as the further application now seems to us, no one in the Old World saw it. It now appears to have been the Chinese who invented the plan of engraving a whole page of characters on a wood block and printing off many copies. They may have begun as early as the sixth century; at any rate in the tenth century they were busy printing books. The writing of the Chinese, from its enormous diversity of characters, is not well suited to printing by movable types, but there is a record that this plan was early devised among them, and that they carried it out with separate terra-cotta types in the eleventh century. Modern writers early in the fourteenth century describe Chinese printing, so that it was probably through them that the art found its way to Europe where not long afterwards the so-called “block-books” printed from whole page wood-blocks after the Chinese manner, made the appearance, followed by books printed with movable types.
What is the main idea?
The main idea of the passage is that printing, developed gradually over time, with the Chinese playing a key role in advancing it by inventing woodblock printing and early movable type, which later influenced the spread of printing technology to Europe.

It was the first day of seventh grade, and everyone was excited to see their friends again. But there was one new kid in the class who stood out from the rest. His name was Alex, and he had just moved to town from a faraway state. As soon as Alex walked into the classroom, all eyes were on him. He was tall and skinny, with messy brown hair and glasses. He looked around nervously, not knowing anyone in the class. The teacher introduced Alex to the class, and everyone said hello. But no one really talked to him after that. They all went back to their own groups of friends and left Alex alone. At lunchtime, Alex sat by himself at a table in the corner of the cafeteria. He didn't know anyone to sit with, so he just ate his sandwich and apple in silence.
