Mildred told on Montag that he was keeping books and Beatty made him burn down his house. Montag didn't care at all because he wanted to show how easy it was to move on.

Montag changed at the end of the book because he ran away from the corrupt society. He can finally see what a good life is and take it all in. He gets to think freely and be independent.
