What is Strawman Fallacy?

100

In the media, Johny Depp was heralded as an innocent male victim finally getting justice for abuse experienced during his defamation trial with Amber Heard.

What is Bandwagon Fallacy? Neither party was anywhere near innocent during this trial, yet the media was quick to side with Johny Depp and his fame over Amber Heard's claims that she was abused in the relationship as well.

The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, outlawed abortion at all stages of pregnancy after 6 weeks of gestation, including cases of rape and incest. The house also created a trigger ban that came into effect after Roe v. Wade was overturned, creating harsh criminal penalties for medical care providers who perform or assist in abortions. The reasoning behind these legislations is an example of an Ad Hominem fallacy because it appeals to the state's traditional, "Christian" views on fetuses rather than logical reasoning backed by medicine.

What is True? Pro-life arguments are an example of Ad Hominem fallacies in action because they ignore reasoning whilst overuse feelings of "protecting life" as the crux of their argument.

The acceptance of a claim without proper reasoning because it comes from a person in power

What is Appeal to Authority Fallacy?

300

In Death Note, Light justifies the killing of incarcerated individuals and anyone who stands in his way by writing their names in a supernatural notebook aptly called the Death Note. He believes that people who have committed crimes are evil and anyone who interferes with his self-proclaimed "godly" status deserves to be punished by death and no less.

What is False Dilemma Fallacy? The simplification of complex issues into ones that require a basic solution (punishment or pardoning under a unified, unyielding law) is part of the reason the prison system has been failing our own country and why prison abolition has been called for over the years.

An example of an appeal to authority fallacy would be how Joe Biden was the sole individual to blame for the rise in gas prices last year.

What is False? The real fallacy this would be is a hasty generalization of blaming one individual for an issue that came about from Russia invading Ukraine.

500

The presentation of a complex issue as one that contains two opposing sides that lead to mutually exclusive outcomes rather than a multitude of possible solutions

What is The False Dilemma Fallacy?

In the show Euphoria, Rue brings up how she knows that Nate was having an affair with Cassie without Maddy's knowledge to get away with discussing her relapse and subsequent flight to escape her mom's frustration.

What is Red Herring Fallacy?

500

The justification for posting black squares on social media in support of the Black Lives Matter movement during the height of media coverage on the police brutality experienced by the Black community in the US was to create a literal media blackout. This would be an example of a Bandwagon fallacy in action.

What is true? This could also be an example of a correlation / causation fallacy in action, i.e "if I post a black square, it shows I'm not a bigot to everyone who follows me." It was a trend for everyone to be involved in rather than an actual form of taking action to stand against the systems of oppression in place.
