Education or Competition
How are the lessons important although Sage dislikes them?
It’s important because if he doesn’t know how to read or write he cannot become prince and Connor will have to resort to killing Sage.
what does Sage sleeping in class shows about him?
He is independent, stubborn, and a bit careless
Who is a new character introduced in the chapter
Master Graves
Why is Sage unwilling to simply follow Connor’s orders?
He values his identity and doesn’t want Connor change him into something he isn’t. (Like a nobleman)
Other than the themes mentioned in the slideshow what is another theme in chapter 13?
Power, courage, control or deception are all valid answers.
Why is education more than just learning facts in this chapter?
Education is not only knowledge on a certain subject. It’s also how to behave, communicate, think, etc.
What’s the difference between Sages knowledge he already has and the knowledge he is receiving this chapter?
The knowledge he receives this chapter is more academic meanwhile the knowledge he already has is focused more on survival.
How does Sage act when Master Graves begins teaching?
He does not take it seriously, instead he repeatedly goes to sleep due to the lack of caring.
What kind of person does Master Graves seem like?
He seems like a very straightforward and strict teacher who will not stand being disrespected.
Is the theme competition harmful or helpful in this chapter?
What is a main conflict in chapter thirteen?
The main conflict is between Master Graves and Sage. They are fighting for sages attention.
Do you think Connor sees Sage as a tool for his plan or more as a person?
I think Connor sees Sage as more of a tool for his plan, he wants to use Sage to pretend to be the lost prince. He does not truly care about his feelings.
What new thing do we learn about Connor’s Plan this chapter?
He is not just teaching them how to become a prince he is teaching them how to specifically become prince Jaron not just by appearance but also by actions.
why Does Sage suggest that he, Roden, and Tobias band together and refuse Connor’s plan? Why did they reject.
Sage suggests this because he wants to keep his identity and he knows Conner is too powerful to be able to escape it alone. Roden and Tobias truly want to be chosen as king and that’s the reason they rejected.
How does this chapter reveal the larger theme of freedom vs control?
Sage represents the freedom aspect of this chapter. Him not taking the lessons seriously and going to sleep is an act of his own freedom, meanwhile master Graves is attempting to control him into paying attention. Making him represent Control, along with Connors control too.
Give me one event in this chapter that shows Rodent is obedient?
Roden cooperates with Master Graves listening to his Orders. He does not challenge Connor like Sage does.
How does Connor use fear to control the boys in this chapter?
He uses fear by making them afraid of what will happen if they don’t cooperate. Since Latamer was killed it shows disobedience could put their lives at risk.
What does Connor think it takes to be prince?
He thinks it takes Academic Knowledge on Carthaya, Manners and respect, practical skills, physical strength, and quick thinking.
What does Connors behaviour tell us about his view on power and morality.
His behaviour tells is he is open to using his power to murder people, commit various crimes, and break the law as long as it’s working in favour to save Carthaya.
How does the setting contribute to the mood of this chapter?
Forcing nearly grown boys who are competing to become the prince into a room filled with child sized furniture creates a mood of degradation and helplessness. It makes both Sage and roden feel powerless about the situation.
Find one event in this chapter that you might think foreshadows future events.
Sages disobedience is foreshadowing how the rest of their training might go.
How do you think the chapter would’ve changed if Sage obeyed Connors orders and was eager to please him like roden?
Sage would not have gotten yelled at by master graves. Sage would blend into the background with Roden and Tobias rather than stand out and be his true self.
How is Sages independence both creating and solving problems for him?
It creates problems by allowing himself to disobey Connor who will punish him for his actions. It solves problems by making him a great leader for the future if he doesn’t know how end up being prince.
