This company’s “Smile Cookie” campaign raises money for local charities. Name it.
Tim Hortons
Canadian privacy officials said this company’s app collected too much of one kind of customer information. Name the company and the information.
Tim Hortons. Location Data
Which strategy means a company does some CSR but does not lead the industry?
Accommodative.
“Never Miss Lunch” helps kids who go hungry. Name the company and the group it works with.
Subway. Food Banks Canada.
True or False: A company can have strong CSR programs and still have ethical problems.
True
This company has a foundation that fights hunger and supports education. It also gives scholarships to its restaurant workers. Name it.
Subway
This company was criticized for supporting groups that oppose LGBTQ+ rights. Name it.
Chick-fli-a
Which strategy means a company leads by choosing to do CSR on its own?
Proactive.
Ronald McDonald House Charities is linked to which company? Is this community, environmental, or employee CSR?
McDonald’s. Community.
True or False: A problem at one franchise location proves the whole company has that problem. If false, tell us why in one sentence.
False. One location does not show what every location or the corporate office does.
This company wants net-zero emissions by 2050. Name it, and name ONE area it must change to reach that goal.
McDonald’s. Any one of: packaging, waste, or its supply chain.
This company was criticized for keeping animals in tight spaces. Name it, and say which area of responsibility this touches (economic, legal, ethical, or discretionary).
Burger King. Ethical.
Our slide says Tim Hortons is both proactive and accommodative. Give ONE reason for each.
Proactive: voluntary environmental and community programs. Accommodative: it responded to the privacy concerns and followed the privacy officials’ advice.
Sort each program into community, environmental, or employee CSR: (a) Smile Cookies, (b) net-zero by 2050, (c) Fresh Start Scholarship.
(a) community, (b) environmental, (c) employee.
A company gives $10 million to charity but has poor working conditions. Which responsibility should you check first before judging it?
Ethical (how it treats workers). Also accept legal if the team says laws may be broken.
Name TWO companies that help their workers grow, and give one example for each.
Any two of: Subway (Fresh Start Scholarship), McDonald’s (training and career development), Burger King (employee development and support).
Your friend says, “Subway broke labour laws at every restaurant.” Tell your friend what is wrong with that.
The cases involved specific franchise owners, not necessarily Subway’s whole company or every location.
Our slide would not label McDonald’s as just ONE strategy. Give one reason why.
It has long-term voluntary environmental and community programs (proactive). It also responded to public concerns about waste, nutrition, or worker treatment (accommodative).
Which shows a stronger commitment: one big donation, or a long-term program? Give a reason. Then give one example from our five brands.
A long-term program usually shows more commitment because it keeps working on the problem. Accept a one-time donation if the team gives a good reason. Examples: Never Miss Lunch, net-zero goal, Fresh Start Scholarship.
Your group picked Subway as the best corporate citizen. Give TWO pieces of evidence and ONE weakness.
Never Miss Lunch with Food Banks Canada, employee scholarships, or strong community work. Weakness: labour problems at some franchise operators.
A company has strong environment and community programs, but it also has one big ethical controversy. Should its CSR score automatically be low? Use at least TWO of these in your answer: economic, legal, ethical, discretionary.
Not automatically. CSR should be judged across all four responsibilities, not just one problem. Accept any answer that uses two of the four areas and gives a reason.
Company A gives a lot to charity but has a serious ethical controversy. Company B gives less but has no big ethical problem. Which one is the better corporate citizen? Name TWO things you would compare before deciding.
Neither wins automatically. Accept any two reasonable things, such as how serious the problem is, how many locations it affects, whether the charity work is long-term, or how the company treats workers.
A company starts a huge CSR program, but only AFTER the public criticized it. Is it proactive? Explain.
Not necessarily. Proactive means acting before being pushed. Acting after criticism is more of a reaction, even if the program is big.
Company A has stronger environmental programs. Company B has stronger community programs. Pick which one is the better corporate citizen and give a reason using evidence.
There is no one right answer. Accept any choice with a reason that uses real evidence from our research.
You must rank all five companies. Name THREE questions you would ask before deciding who is best.
Accept any three good questions, such as: How serious is the problem? How many locations does it affect? Did the company act on its own or only after pressure? Is the good work long-term? Does it do well in all four responsibilities, not just one?
