Levels of Measurement
Which test do I use?
Descriptive Statistics
Qualitative
100

What level of measurement is this?

Did you receive treatment? (yes/no)

Nominal

100

What test would you use if you had two continuous (interval/ratio) variables?

Correlation

100

For which variable levels of measurement (i.e., Nominal, ordinal, interval ratio) is it appropriate to report the mode?

All of them!

100

What is line-by-line open coding?

Reading the transcript line by line and noting parts of the transcript related to the research question (AKA coding)

200

What level of measurement is this?

Score on a standardized depression screener (scores range from 0 to 14)

Interval/continuous (either answer is correct)

200

Which test would you use if you had two nominal/ordinal variables?

Chi-square

200

Broadly, what does standard deviation tell us about?

How spread out the distribution of scores is for a variable.

200

What is an audit trail?

A way to show readers how you came to your conclusions. Examples include memoing/journaling, or a table with what codes make up your themes.

300

What level of measurement is this?

Age, but answer choices are 18-24, 25-39, 40-59, and 60 and above.

Ordinal

300

What test would you use if you had a nominal/ordinal  variable with 3 or more categories and a continuous (interval/ratio) variable?

ANOVA

300

What does skewness tell us about a variable's distribution of scores?

Whether it is shaped like a normal bell curve or the responses are "squished" to one side--does anyone remember how we can tell if a variable is skewed?

300

What is constant comparison?

Comparing the codes identified in your transcripts with each other to put them into similar groups (which become our themes/subthemes)

400

What is one example of when reporting the mean wouldn't be appropriate?

If the variable is categorical (i.e., nominal, ordinal) or when there are outliers

400

What test would you run if you had a categorical (i.e., nominal) variable with two categories and an interval/ratio (continuous) variable?

t-Test

400

What measures of central tendency/ variability are appropriate for continuous (i.e., interval or ratio) variables?

All of them!

Central Tendency: Mean, median, mode

Variability: Range, standard deviation, skewness

400

What is the difference between inductive and deductive coding?

Inductive: No pre-existing codes before you start analysis

Deductive: Identifying specific codes you are looking for based on the literature before analysis

500

How do we write up themes?

Start by saying how many themes there will be and providing their names. Then, for each theme, start with a topic sentence naming the theme. Next, share one way that it showed up for participants, followed by a participant quote that demonstrates that. It is also often helpful to have a sentence after the quote to help contextualize it.

Start a new paragraph with a topic sentence describing another way the theme showed up for participants. Follow it with participant quotes and relevant context as appropriate.
