What is a Foot?
The basic rhythmic unit in a line of poetry, usually made up of 2–3 syllables.

A reference to something the reader is already familiar with.
What is a Shakespearean Sonnet?

The pattern of rhymes at the end of lines, marked with letters like ABAB or AABB.
What is a Dactyl?
A foot with one stressed syllable followed by two unstressed syllables.
What is Enjambment?
When a line of poetry continues onto the next without punctuation.
What is a Trochee?
A foot with a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one.
What is Monometer?
A line with only one metrical foot.
What is Rhythm?
The beat or movement created by the sounds in a poem.
What is Iambic Pentameter?
A line of poetry with five iambs, or ten syllables total.
What is a Caesura?
A pause or break in a line of poetry, often marked by punctuation.
What is a Volta?
The part of a Petrarchan sonnet where the tone or idea shifts, usually at line 8.
What is Heptameter?
The seven-foot line of poetry, the longest standard meter type.
