Final Fantasy XIV has some clear inspiration worn on its sleeve, especially when it comes to new jobs, for instance, Viper, the newest class to come in Dawntrail is inspired by Zidane Tribal from FFIX as well as Archer from Fate: Stay Night who uses dual swords that can come together into one weapon.
Viper is actually partially based on Kirito from Sword Art Online.
Raubahn Aldynn, former Flame General of Ul’dah, wielded two weapons before losing an arm at the Bloody Banquet, after being released from prison, he handed one of his swords to his adoptive son Pippin, while keeping his other blade Tizona.
Raubahn gave Tizona to Pippin.
Through our Adventures as the Warrior of Light, we can meet many beast tribes who can assist us in leveling our battle, crafting, and gathering classes. Each tribe has a reputation you can build, which starts at friendly and can build all the way up to Bloodsworn.
All of ARR's Tribes as well as 2 in Heavensward actually start at Neutral, 2 ranks below Friendly.
A favorite to many, the Eden Raid Series saw the return of many old primal fights that many fans quite appreciated. Ifrit, Leviathan, Titan, Garuda, Shiva, and Ramuh all got interesting new fights of their own, that took old concepts, and redefined them in fun new ways.

Hrothgar and Viera being gender locked is not a new struggle. in FFXIV 1.0 several races were not allowed to be both genders, for instance, Roegadyn and Highlanders could only be male, white Miqote and Lalafell could only be female.
Lalafell could be either gender.
Tanks all have skills known as Gap Closers, that let them close the distance with their enemies. Paladins have Intervention, Warriors have Onslaught, Dark Knight has Plunge, and Gunbreaker has Rough Divide.
Paladins have Intervene, not Intervention.
The Heavensward Expansion has the player facing off against Archbishop Thordan VIII and his personal guard, the Heaven’s Ward, including members such as Zephirin, Charibert, Grinnaux, and Adelphel, to name a few.
Thordan is actually Thordan VII, not Thordan VIII.
Coerthas and its city Ishgard are known to have several areas with quite long names, namely The First Dicasterial Observatorium of Aetherial and Astrological Phenomena, The Divine Barrack of the Fury's Vigil, and The Supreme Sacred Tribunal of Halonic Inquisitory Doctrine.
The Divine Barrack of the Fury's Vigil is not real.
Many callouts in fights are named after their first ever appearance, for instance, Proteans, which are a series of cones pointing at each player from the boss, are named after Protean Wave, an attack done by Leviathan in Leviathan Extreme.
Protean Wave is actually used by Living Liquid AKA Pepsiman.
Many jobs are relegated to one weapon in most or all cases, however, a couple classes have weapons meant to have other appearances, Warrior sadly only has one other option outside of their usual axes, being the Dwarven Mithril Hammer from Shadowbringers.
Warrior has Gaia’s hammer, Hyposkhesphyra, the Asphodelos War Hammer, as well as the Blackbosom Reaper, a Scythe.
The greatest part of a healer’s kit is their skill to bring another player back from the dead, with each healer having a skill costing 2500 MP, White Mage has Raise, Scholar has Resurrection, Astrologian has Ascend, and Sage has Egeiro.

Many of the Primals in Final Fantasy XIV take some major real world inspiration, for instance, Titania, the Pixie King is based on a Character of the same name from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

In Garlemald citizens are given 3 letter middle names which denote their rank within Garlean society. Van for Legatuses in charge of their own Legions, Nan for Magitech Scientists, Vos for basic citizens, and many more.

Akh Morn, a common attack tied to dragons in FFXIV tends to show itself as a tankbuster that hits multiple times, 4 times to start, then increasing by one for every cast of the skill.

Many players adore Masayoshi Soken, FFXIV’s composer for creating FFXIV’s fantastic soundtrack, having made awesome themes like Shadowbringers’ To the Edge, Heavensward’s Dragonsong, and Endwalker’s Flow.
Soken never composed Dragonsong, Nobuo Uematsu did.
Understandably jobs in FFXIV have different names between languages and for some, this has caused some confusion, in Japanese, Paladin is referred to as Naito, or Knight, while Dark Knight is referred to as Daaku Naito, retaining its name between languages.

When it comes to battle players really only need to keep an eye on two of their own stats, HP, Hit Points, and MP, Magic Points, though this was not always the case, prior to Shadowbringers, Players had a third stat they needed to maintain being TP, or Technical Points, which are spent when a player uses their weaponskills.
TP stands for Tactical Points.
In the monk toolkit, the class swaps between 3 forms, Opo-opo, a lemur which a type of monkey, Raptor, meant to represent Dinosaurs, and Coeurl, meant to be a fantasy take on a Leopard or Panther.
Lemurs are not Monkeys.
Oftentimes, many bits of the story will give you additional Dialogue if you completed certain quests before hand, for instance, you can call out to G'raha at the end of Shadowbringers if you completed the Crystal Tower Alliance Raid Series prior, or how in the Bozja questline, Misija will make a seperate comment on your use of White Auracite, but only if you completed the Ivalice Raid Series.
Bozja Requires you to have completed Ivalice, so you don't get any special dialogue.

Born in the outskirts of Tokyo, Naoki Yoshida the lead dev of Final Fantasy XIV joined Square Enix in 2004 to work on Dragon Quest X after a long stint of working at Hudsonsoft. His work netted him a lot of praise, ultimately leading to the higher executives of Square Enix giving him the reigns to lead development of FFXIV after its rough launch.
YoshiP was actually born in Sapporo in Hokkaido.
