Irony
When someone says something but means the complete opposite.
What is verbal irony?
The pattern of rhymes used in a poem, usually marked by letters to symbolize correspondences: ababbcc.
What is rhyme scheme?
Comparison using "like" or "as".
What is a simile?
Repeating consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
What is alliteration?
When the complete opposite happens of what is expected.
What is situational irony?
An arrangement of a certain number of lines, usually four or more that sometimes has a fixed length, meter, or rhyme scheme, forming a division of a poem.
What is a stanza?
Comparison without using "like" or "as". (calling something, something else).
What is a metaphor?
Giving non-human things, human characteristics.
What is personification?
When the audience knows things the character does not.
What is dramatic irony?
The representation through language of sense experience.
What is imagery?
Repeating vowel sounds in words.
What is assonance?
A man meets his long-lost son but doesn't know it, although the reader does.

What is denotation?
A repeating word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses.
Referring to other texts outside of itself.
What is literary allusion?
A marriage counselor files for divorce.
What is an example of situational irony?
A word that has generally has a negative feeling towards it.
What is negative connotation?
A seeming contradiction that has some truth to it.
What is paradox?
referring to a part of something to represent the whole.
What is synecdoche?
