Eraserhead clearly tells the tragic story of a man ground down by a cold, industrial society, unable to even raise a child because of the antagonistic nature of the world. Despite the best of intentions, he and his family are unable to stay together, let alone give their baby a happy upbringing; afterall, how are they meant to even provide food for their child when the chickens in this world are so repulsive? The only thing the protagonist has left to spur him vainly onward is the empty promise of the woman in the radiator, that in some far off, indistinct time and place, everything will be fine.
