Reading Selection 1: African American civil rights advocate and feminist, Ida B. Wells-Barnett lived from 1862-1931. She was born a slave but later became a part owner of and reporter for the Memphis Free Speech and led many famous anti-lynching crusades. Reading Selection 2: In 1892, Ida Wells-Barnett spoke out against the lynching of three important African American businessmen from Memphis. The newspaper office where Wells worked was attacked as a result. Soon after, Wells moved to New York City, where she continued to make speeches and write articles against lynching. In the following decades, Wells became a much-sought-after lecturer and traveled throughout the U.S. and Britain to discuss anti-lynching activities. Reading Selection 3: In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Ida B. Wells-Barnett crusaded for justice and defended democracy. She was a radical and courageous leader who fought to stop lynching and achieve racial equality for all people.
