Name and explain two challenges for Canadian labour related to the falling union density rate in Canada.
What is...
1) Democratization – unions must take steps to enhance internal democracy to engage their members and develop capacities. Internal democracy plays an important role in unions coping with globalization.
2) Leadership and Alternative Vision – most unions support universal visions, such as health care, education, women’s rights, minorities rights, etc. Unions must develop these visions to increase union support. Union leadership is crucial as well, because it helps involve members in situations and helps problem-solve and carry on with vision.
3) Organizing – organizing new members is important for effective bargaining and developing union culture. Also, more centralized bargaining structures to reduce servicing costs.
4) Contingent workers – one third of Canadian workers are employed in nonstandard work arrangements. The IR model is ill equipped to provide these workers with collective bargaining.
