What is he enters Salem with pride in the authority of the court system and believes he can objectively identify witchcraft. Towards the end of the play, he loses his faith in the court system and is desperate to save lives so he attempts to convince people to lie under oath such as Elizabeth Proctor because he realizes he can’t diagnose witchcraft successfully.
