Explain the concept of isostasy using an iceberg as an example.
Isostacy is a condition of equilibrium between continental crust and the mantle below. Continental crust displaces the denser mantle until balance is reached. As a result, the root of a mountain can reach deep into the mantle. Similarly, the bottom of an ice berg extends deep under water, because ice is less dense than liquid water, and because the mass of the ice equals the mass of the water displaced by it (Archimedes' Principle).
Describe the difference between fission and conjugation
Fission is the division of a bacterium into two new and genetically identical cells. Conjugation is two bacteria attaching to each other and exchanging genetic material; no new cells are produced.
