The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 was a megathrust earthquake with an estimated death toll of over 100,000 people, destroying nearly half of Tokyo and Yokohama. Fires spread rapidly due to strong winds from a nearby typhoon, leading to most of the devastation and casualties. On top of that, it was an 8.0 on this commonly used scale to measure the seismic waves of earthquakes
