With DIRECT characterization, the author explicitly provides traits to describe the characters, usually about their appearance or nature.
Ex: George Milton is described as having has strong sharp features.
Define personification.
Giving a non-human thing (an object) human qualities.

What is tone, and why is it important?
Tone is the attitude the author has towards a subject. It is important because it lets the reader know how they should feel about a certain topic.

Curley has a person vs person conflict with Lennie in chapter three.
Lennie is smiling when Curley walks into the bunkhouse and Curley thinks Lennie is mocking him. Curley then starts a fight with Lennie and Lennie ends up crushing every bone in Curley's hand.

Flat - Only has a few traits. We don't know much about them.
Round - complex, and have many different traits.
Static - character doesn’t change throughout the course of the story. They are the exact same person in the end as they were in the beginning.
Dynamic - character changes through the story. They are usually main characters.

Connotation is the context of a sentence or word
Denotation is the dictionary definition of a word
Ex: Chimney typically has a neutral connotation, but in Night it has a negative connotation because the smoke of the chimney is from the victims that were killed in the crematorium
