Why do you think some Romans supported having an emperor, while other didn't?

Many Romans were afraid of having an emperor because it felt less democratic. They didn't want any one person to have that much power over Rome (which is the main reason Caesar was murdered). Some Romans enjoyed the prospect of having an emperor because of the benefits they got from it. Caesar and Octavian both gave food to Rome's poor, and threw festivals and provided free entertainment to the citizens of Rome. With Octavian, there was also the promise of peace after so many years of war and fighting for power of Rome.

How did agriculture lead to the development of civilization?

Agriculture allowed people to stay in one place for longer, leading to more permanent settlements. Although farming was hard work, it ultimately was less work than hunting and gathering, which gave people more free time. Because not everyone had to spend all day finding food, they began to do other things like establishing government, creating more organized religion, coming up with better tools and technology, etc.

Neolithic Revolution

Compare the rights of women in Greece to the rights of women in Egypt.

Women in Egypt had more rights. They could own land, run businesses, get divorced, and even (though rare) rule over Egypt. Hatshepsut and Nefertiti are examples of two Egyptian female rulers. In Greece, women were not considered citizens and could not vote, own property, run businesses, or be involved in government (let alone lead it!).

With the Roman Republic, only the land-owning elite (called "patricians") could hold office in the Senate and vote. In Athens, how wealthy you were did not matter, but you did have to be free and born in Athens. In both places, only adult men could participate in government.

What is cultural diffusion? Give an example of it from Unit 2.
