What is author's purpose?
The use of logic to persuade (involving numbers/statistics, definitions, facts, or logical reasoning)
What is logos?
The underlying message of a fiction text which makes an observation about life or human nature
What is a theme statement?
The reason Iago is mad at Othello in the beginning of the play
He gave the lieutenantship to Cassio instead of Iago.
"I am not who I appear to be."
Who is Iago?
To persuade, to inform, to entertain
When the audience has more information about the events or characters than the characters themselves have
Who are Desdemona and Cassio?
"Oh, my reputation, Iago, my reputation!"
Who is Cassio?
A logical opinion or argument that can be supported with evidence and reasoning
What is a claim?
The use of a speaker's or source's credibility or trustworthiness
What is ethos?
When a speaker's words and tone do not match; using sarcasm
What is verbal irony?
The object that is used to frame Cassio and provide "proof" to Othello that Desdemona is being unfaithful
What is the handkerchief?
"Why did I ever get married? I'm sure this good and honest man sees and knows more, much more, than he's telling me."

The overall message of a nonfiction text, written as a complete sentence
What is the central idea?
FDR: "Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack."
