I do not have a backbone.  Instead, I have a hard, external supporting structure called a...

Exoskeleton.

Name four classes of VERTEBRATES and whether they are cold- or warm-blooded:

Mammals - warm

Birds - warm

Amphibians - cold

Reptiles - cold

100

I lose my leaves to go dormant during harsh weather.  I am...

Deciduous.

Define symbiosis:

Any relationship between two different organisms in an ecosystem.

100

What is the word for a bird of prey that uses its talons to catch and hold prey?

Raptor.
200

I am an invertebrate with an exoskeleton and paired, segmented legs, but you don't know how many.  What am I?

An Arthropod.

200

I am warmblooded, I have fur, and give birth to live young.  What am I?

A mammal.

200

When trees have cones to hold their seeds, they are called...

Coniferous.

(Sounds like you're saying "carnivorous" - isn't that funny?)

200

What are the 3 types of symbiosis?

Extra: What do some consider to be a 4th type of symbiosis?

1. Mutualism - both benefit.

2. Commensalism - one benefits and other is neither benefitted nor harmed.

3.Parasitism - one benefits and one is harmed.

4. Competition!

What is it called when a species can adapt to survive in many types of habitats and environments?

Can you give two examples?

A Generalist species.

Coyotes, crows, rats, mice, raccoons, pigeons.

300

What is a butterfly's tongue called?

A proboscis.

Name two ways to distinguish between amphibians and reptiles:

- Slimy moist skin / dry scales or bony plates.

- Breathes water as young with gills and air later / only breathes air with lungs.

- Lives on land and water / only lives on land.

300

This word is used to describe grasses and forbs, but not to describe woody plants like trees and shrubs.

Herbaceous.

300

Name one example of commensalism:

Oak galls.

Wasp lays eggs on oak tree and injects a toxin.  Toxin doesn't hurt the oak tree, but the tree grows a big ball around the site, which protects the wasp eggs and gives them food to eat after they hatch to grow.  Doesn't hurt or beneift the tree.

What is an animals specific role, and place, in an ecosystem called?

Its Niche.

For animals that metamorphosize, at what stage does metamorphosis occur?
The Pupal Stage, when they are pupa.
400

Name two defining features of BIRDS:

Feathers

Hollow bones

400

I live for only one growing season, when I start from a seed, grow leaves, and then flowers to make seeds before its too late.  I am...

An Annual.

400

Name 2 types of parasites:

- Mosquitoes

- Ticks

- Fleas

- Mistletoe

- Spittle bugs

Name 3 stages of the trout lifecycle:

Egg

Alevin

Fry

Juvenile (Sub-adult)

Adult

500

What is the difference between a cocoon and a chrysalis?

Cocoons are breathable, woven of silk of moths during their pupal stage.

Chrysalis are hardened exoskeletons of butterflies during their pupal stage.

500

Which class of vertebrates undergoes metamorphosis?

Can you name 3-4 stages of that metamorphosis?

Amphibians:

Egg

Larva

Pupa (the metamorphisis stage)

Adult

Name 2 methods plants spread their seeds:

Extra: can you provide examples?

- Animals (berries in scat; seeds that stick to fur)

- Wind (cattails, dandelions)

- Water (any seed that washes into water - especially aquatic plants like rushes, sedges, and grasses!)

- Gravity (maple helicopter seeds and other trees)

- Explosion (California Poppy)

Explain what lichen is, and why it is an example of mutualism:

It is a symbiotic relationship between algae and fungus.  Normally, algae can only live in the water because they have no structure to support them on dry land, and fungus have to grow on decomposing matter to have a food source.

Together, they form lichen, where the fungus gives the algae structure to survive out of water, and the algae photosynthesizes as a producer to give the fungus energy.
