What is a Type 1 building and give strengths and weaknesses of it.

FIRE RESISITIVE

Constructed of concrete or protected steel

STRENGTHS: All materials are non combustible and fire resistive for up to 4 hours. Not vulnerable to collapse.

WEAKNESS: Exposed steel can wear down over time. Difficult to ventilate due to roof material and size.

You arrive on Squad 4 to a reported animal locked in a vehicle. It is at the mall on a Saturday in May. It is 84 degrees and the caller is not the owner. They state that the dog has been in the car for 15 minutes and looks hot and thirsty. What do you do?

POLICY #109

If a human or animal is locked in the vehicle FFD members will evaluate the surroundings and attempt to contact the vehicle owner.

If a human or animal is in a vehicle in extreme danger due to heat or other conditions then crews will immediately access the vehicle with any means necessary.

Contact FPD if the owner is not found or damage occurs.

200

What is Type 2 Building Construction and give strengths and weaknesses of it.

NON COMBUSTIBLE

Usually have metal structural members and decking

STRENGTHS: Roof covered with lightweight concrete, foam insulated membrane with 1 to 2 hour burn resistance rating.

WEAKNESS: Metal roof affected by heat not just direct flame contact. May become vulnerable to collapse.

200

You arrive on Squad 4 to a single story residence with heavy smoke showing from the right front window on the ALPHA/DELTA side. It is 8pm, there is a car in the driveway and no one is outside. The caller was the next door neighbor. There is no engine or ladder within 3 minutes of you. What do you do?

What is Type 3 Building Construction and give Strengths and Weaknesses.

ORDINARY- Non combustible walls and wood roofs. Cord truss roof systems. Unreinforced masonry walls.

STRENGTHS: With combo of non combustible masonry and fire cut joists exterior walls can stand even in collapse.

WEAKNESS: Connected attics allow fire spread. Horizontal void spaces allow hidden fire.

300

You witness a head on collision at a stop light while in Squad 4. One vehicle catches fire instantly and the second car is entangled in the car that is on fire. Both drivers are unconscious and the driver of the second vehicle is obviously pinned. What do you do?

Who becomes the RIT Supervisor in a MAYDAY incident?

The original IC becomes RIT Supervisor and assigns a new IC for the original call. The Safety Officer on the call should assume this role.

400

What is Type 4 Building Construction and give Strengths and Weaknesses.

HEAVY TIMBER- Most common before the 1960's. Often used in industrial buildings. 6x6 or larger wood members

STRENGTHS: Many load bearing walls are non combustible. Well built and can withstand dire fire contact for long periods.

WEAKNESS: Many were used as factories and the wood is saturated in oils and hazards that promote fire spread.

400

You are the firefighter on the back of Engine 4. We arrive to 1,100 sq ft residence with fire showing from the attached garage located on the Alpha/Bravo side of the residence. It is 1pm on a Tuesday. There are no cars in the driveway and the caller is the neighbor. Fire is spreading into the residence. What are your personal objectives?

What is Type 5 Building Construction and give Strengths and Weaknesses.

WOOF FRAMED- Usually residential. Wooden walls and roof components. Roof covered with shingles or tile. Wooden floor truss

STRENGTHS: Large beams offer structural support and helps prevent rapid vertical spread

WEAKNESS: Structural collapse fastest of all building types. Manufactured wood members burn quick. Modern construction allows for rapid fire spread.

500

Squad 4 is dispatched as the sole unit to an illegal burn. The address is the woods behind the EZ Auto. You arrive to find heavy smoke in the woodline and fire visually spreading away from Bragg BLVD. The fire is 150-200 ft from the parking lot where you can drive to. Flames are 20-25 ft high in the trees and are crowning. What do you do?

Put the fire out
