Checking the scene may yield clues that point to the cause of the person's illness (i.e. an open or spilled container, an unusual odor, or other people in the area who are also ill). Find out background info on events leading up to incident, how much of the substance was ingested and what it was. Activate EAP and monitor/care until EMS arrives. If person is responsive and alert, call the national hotline for information on what type of care to give.

Causes painful episodes that occur when abnormal red blood cells block the vessels, leading to pain in the arms/legs, hands/feet, chest/back.  Activate the EAP. have the person rest in a comfy position. Offer to assist with any medication taken for this condition. Offer a heating pad to apply to painful areas. Offer fluids. Monitor person until EMS arrives.

What is sickle cell crisis?

Pain, tingling, burning and numbness at the site. Numbness may effect the whole body and cause seizures and/or breathing difficulty.
