What is a Primary Assessment?

Assessment of any life-threatening injuries or illnesses and alert others if you need help.

You approach a guest who is experiencing these symptoms:

- Chest pain

- Shortness of breath

- Heavy sweating

- Fear of impending doom

How do you proceed?

- Activate EMS immediately

- Retrieve AED & Oxygen

- Allow the guest to find a comfortable position and loosen tight clothing

- Comfort and reassure the person

How do you control bleeding?

- Glove up

- Place an absorbent pad on the wound

- Apply pressure until the bleeding stops

- Wrap wound with co band/roller gauze

(Bonus points: if blood soaks through gauze, do not remove it, apply more gauze)

Face - Observe facial droop

Speech/smile - Observe slurred speech or ask the guest to smile

What are the differences between heat exhaustion and heat stroke?

- Heat exhaustion is the precursor to heat stroke

- Heat stroke includes many or all heat exhaustion symptoms ALONG with altered mental status and possible hot & dry skin

EMS must be activated in cases of heat stroke

How do you treat a nose bleed?

- Place gauze under nostrils

- Ask guest to pinch the bridge of their nose and tilt their head forward

- Have guest remain in this position for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops

Shock develops when poor blood flow creates a shortage of oxygen to body tissue. 

- Lay the person flat on the ground

- Elevate legs if guest is uninjured

- Use emergency blanket to insulate on top and underneath to prevent heat loss

- Reassure the guest

- Remove any clothing to expose the injury site

- Leave wound exposed. DO NOT apply dressing.

- Keep guest in comfortable position

It is used to pack a wound for a severe injury that cannot be controlled with a tourniquet or standard gauze & pressure alone.
